UNO Stacking Rules — Can You Stack +2 and +4 Cards?

The complete answer to UNO's most argued-about rule — and how to play with stacking online for free.

Can You Stack Cards in UNO? The Official Answer

Officially: no. Mattel's official UNO rules do not allow stacking. If someone plays a Draw 2 on you, you draw 2 cards and lose your turn — you cannot play your own Draw 2 to pass the penalty along. Mattel has even confirmed this on social media, to the heartbreak of millions.

But here's the thing: almost everyone plays with stacking anyway. It's the world's most popular UNO house rule, and it's a core rule in UNO No Mercy. That's why our game lets the host turn stacking on or off — you choose how brutal your table is.

How Stacking Works in Our Game

We don't just have one stacking switch — the host controls each type separately in a Custom room:

Can You Stack a +2 on a +4?

In official rules, no — you can't stack anything. As a house rule, tables disagree: some allow only same-card stacking (+2 on +2), others allow cross-stacking. In our game this is exactly the Mixed Stacking toggle — turn it on for full chaos, or leave it off so only matching cards stack.

What Happens When You Can't Stack?

The pile stops with you. You draw every accumulated card at once — we've seen players draw 20+ cards from a long stack chain — and your turn is skipped. In UNO No Mercy mode, collecting 25 cards eliminates you from the game entirely.
